Philip Schoenfeld, MD - Research Leadership in Gastroenterology

Philip Schoenfeld, MD, is a gastroenterology (GI) researcher and clinical practitioner with more than 250 publications to his name spanning editorials, commentaries, book chapters, abstracts, and original research. Among his accomplishments has been coauthoring screening guidelines adopted by the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) for irritable bowel syndrome, colorectal cancer, and chronic constipation. Philip Schoenfeld, MD, also authored a Quality Indicators in Colonoscopy position statement endorsed by multiple GI societies.

Dr. Schoenfeld is founder and chairman of the board of EBMed, an educational organization with a primary focus of furthering GI patient care through evidence-based medicine principles and continuing education. In tandem with this, the nonprofit delivers sponsorship and mentorship opportunities that help advance academic careers in the field for women and those from underrepresented ethnic backgrounds.

Dr. Schoenfeld’s present responsibilities extend to an editor-in-chief role with the ACG publication Evidence-Based GI, which summarizes and comments on recent studies published in generalist, non-GI journals such as The Lancet and the New England Journal of Medicine. He is also chief (emeritus) of the Gastroenterology (GI) Section of Detroit’s John D. Dingell Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center.
